Is It A Good Idea To Redirect Another Domain To Your Main Site To Push Power?

The exact question was: I have two domains in the same local area + home service niche. Domain #1 is ranking on page 2 for the main term and I'm actively working on it. Domain #2 does not currently have a site on it, so it's ranking at all, but it does have some links (I picked it up from a contractor who got out of the business a few years ago). I'm thinking to 301 domain #2 to domain #1 to push my site up the ranks. I'm curious if you think this is a good idea? If so: any best practices, dos & don'ts, pitfalls to be aware of, etc?
